Tips
Winterizing Strawberries
Winterizing strawberries is essential for their survival and productivity in colder climates. Here's a breakdown of the key steps:
1. Renovate:
Timing: Late July to early August.Process: Prune away dead or damaged leaves and stems. Thin out overcrowded plants. Cut June-bearing strawberries to 1.5 inches above the crown.Purpose: Improves plant health and prevents disease.
2. Fertilize:
Timing: One month before the first frost.Type: Balanced, granular fertilizer.Amount: Approximately 1 pound per 25 plants.Purpose: Provides essential nutrients for growth and fruiting.
3. Mulch:
Timing: November or December, after the first frost.Material: Lightweight natural mulch like salt marsh hay, pine needles, or weed-free straw.Depth: 3-5 inches.Purpose: Protects crowns from cold, insulates soil, and retains moisture.
Additional Tips:
Frost Protection Covers: An alternative to mulch, but may cause early leafing.Timing: Mulch or cover when daytime temperatures are consistently in the 20s and the top inch of soil is frozen.Removal: Remove mulch or covers in spring when plants begin to leaf out.
By following these steps, you can ensure your strawberry plants thrive through the winter and produce abundant fruit the following season.
